Psychological Testing and Assessment

Psychological, psycho-educational, and neuropsychological assessment help us understand the ways people learn, think and act. The purpose of assessment is to accurately diagnose the problem by gathering convergent cognitive, behavioral, and psychological evidence. Accurate diagnosis is essential in order to know what treatment plan to pursue. This scientifically based approach can help save valuable time and money by correctly diagnosing the underlying source of individuals' difficulties.

Psychologists and neuropsychologists are uniquely trained among mental health professionals to conduct and interpret the types of tests used in holistic psychological assessment. First, an in-depth clinical interview provides a full history of the client and their current problems. Then a determination is made as to what tests, measures, and observations to administer. Depending on the referral questions, a testing battery may include an intelligence test, an achievement test, a personality inventory, behavioral rating scales, neuropsychological tests, and projective tests. After administering a personalized test battery, the psychologist will prepare an extensive written report which integrates data obtained from clinical interview, written documentation (e.g. school reports), and formal testing. The assessment will conclude with a clear understanding of relevant diagnoses and related treatment recommendations. Many clients experience relief at having a new understanding of why they think, feel and act in the ways that they do, and assessment can be a great catalyst for change.

Psychologists have expertise in assessing children and adults with developmental delays such as autism, learning disabilities, and intellectual functioning issues, executive functioning difficulties including (ADHD), emotional, and psychiatric disorders, and relationship issues. Appropriate diagnosis and intervention can improve learning outcomes, help develop skills to solve problems effectively, help a person learn to cope with negative emotional states, discover strategies for addressing learning difficulties and behavior problems, and create more positive interpersonal interactions. If you or a love one is experiencing difficulties in any area of their functioning, consider psychological assessment as an investment on the pathway to a more successful future.
